John wrote the book of Revelation to Christians who were suffering under brutal persecution. John understood what they were going though; he himself was in exile as punishment for preaching the Gospel. In this passage, however, he portrayed them as victors--robed in white, waving palm branches, singing hymns of praise to God. Their suffering was but a passing moment, and by the power of their risen Lord and Saviour, they had already won the victory over suffering and death.
John's message is for us, as well as for those to whom he addressed this book. Being followers of Jesus Christ does not spare us from suffering in this life. Whatever we may be suffering, we can rest assured that God is with us, and by his power we have already triumphed.
